A historic event for Asian triathlon - Second CATA Congress

Asian triathlon history was made today in Almaty. The city hosted the Second Congress of the Central Asian Triathlon Association (CATA), which includes the national triathlon federations of the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

The congress, chaired by the CATA President Galimzhan Yessenov, was attended by numerous association members, including First Vice-President of the Triathlon Federation of Uzbekistan – Farrukh Nasyrov, President of the Triathlon Federation of the Kyrgyz Republic – Chyngyz Alaknov, and CATA General Secretary – Maxim Kryat. Also invited to the congress were guests of honor, including President of the Islamic Triathlon Federation of Iran Mahdi Goudzari, and Deputy for Sports of the National Triathlon Federation of Afghanistan Naser Ahmadi.

The Congress was concluded by identifying CATA’s the main goals for the near future, including specific projects, and a number of important decisions were taken, which will determine the future direction of the organization’s work.

The association plans to make the Central Asian region a leader in the development and popularization of triathlon in Asia. To achieve this, it intends to ensure full media coverage of CATA activities, create a regulatory framework, increase the involvement in triathlon of the population of each CATA member country up to 1%, and finally train professional triathletes and para-triathletes to be rated in the World Top 30 and Asian Top 5.

An important decision passed unanimously was the entry of the National Triathlon Federation of Afghanistan and the Triathlon Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran into the structure of CATA. Additionally, by unanimous decision, Farrukh Nasyrov was elected Vice-President of CATA and Chingyz Alkanov was elected Senior Vice-President of CATA. The delegates' decision to create a Legal Committee, Media Committee, Competition Committee and Paratriathlon Committee was equally passed without objection. The first task of the newly formed committees was to approve the domain name of CATA’s official website -*

Perhaps the most important decision taken during the Congress was the designation of the dates of CATA’s first competition. The triathlon race is scheduled for October 5, 2019. The main feature of this historic race will be its internationality, i.e. the race will begin with a swimming stage of 1.1 km in the city of Shymkent (Kazakhstan), then the athletes will travel 121 km from Shymkent to the capital of Uzbekistan and the race will finish with a 11 km run through the streets of Tashkent.

The delegates noted that such a decision was made to honor the year of Kazakhstan in Uzbekistan. The first CATA Paratriathlon race will be held in the framework of the first Asian Cup in Aktau on September 22, 2019. Registration for these major historical events will soon be available on the official CATA website.

CATA has been created on the initiative of K.K. Masimov - 2018 President of the Kazakhstan Triathlon Federation.
